>> Many people complained about the introduction of the average speed cameras on the A14.
But the benefits of the camera are now clear (Town Crier, August 14).
Not only has it reduced the number of accidents, but the road flows much, much better.

The only people who can complain now are those who want to break the law and exceed the speed limit.

Many people think cameras are just to raise cash, but it's clear that when used properly they can improve safety, which is much more important.

Councils need to budget carefully
>> As councils start to look at their budgets for next year, I'm asking the leader of district and county councils to look seriously at any increase in expenditure.

Residents appreciate the problems caused by inflation – after all, they are suffering from them too.

With food inflation running at nine per cent and fuel prices rising exponentially, this is not the time for increases in costs, but for a root and branch examination of all expenditure and management costs to see how councils across Cambridgeshire can best help hard-pressed pensioners and families.

Equally, though, where capital reserves exist and building plans could be brought forward, I feel sure that the local employment this generates would be welcomed in the light of recent redundancies in the building trade announced across the county.

And finally the county council should look seriously at itself. Following the disastrous reorganisation of four years ago, it is probable that we do not have an organisation that is fully effective.
There is duplication of activity, there are inefficient processes and there is a top heavy organisation.

I feel there is an opportunity for every council to lead by example and to show the people of Cambridgeshire that we are aware of the difficulties they are facing and that we are responding to them.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats Cambridgeshire County Council

And pay for their own petrol

>> I have heard that our councillors are talking of increasing council tax to pay for the increase in petrol prices.

I think they have a nerve expecting tax payers to foot the bill when everybody else has to pay their own petrol bills. The councillors expenses are more than a lot of people earn.

Over the last 20 years council tax has gone through the roof just to pay for a massive influx of councillors on our councils. I believe they are doing very little to improve Huntingdon, with half our High Street being full of estate agents, banks and phone shops. All that's left now is a couple of supermarkets who charge what they want.

Having seen Pathfinder Palace being set up I believe we will need about another 100 councillors to fill it. The cost of our new council offices must run into millions of pounds of tax payers money just to make them comfortable.

What will be the cost to furnish it?

Going back over the years our council sold off all the council houses which must have netted it millions.
So what happened to all that money?

Well done Louis

>> I just wanted to say a big congratulations to Louis Smith.

I haven't watched much of the Olympics but I tuned in on Sunday to watch him.

Although I didn't really understand what was going on (and it all seems rather subjective to me), it looked like Louis put in an outstanding performance.

He has done Huntingdonshire proud and everyone should be delighted to have such an excellent sporting facility like Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastics Club on our doorstep.

>> It's great to see Team GB doing so well in Beijing, and even better that one of our own, Louis Smith, was among the medals.

Congratulations Louis, you really deserved it.

A-levels were hard work
>> I have just received my A-level results and I'm delighted to have secured a place at my preferred university.

But it's depressing that so many people criticise the achievements of us teenagers. Every year the media carries reports about how much easier they are.

It's not true. I had to work extremely hard for my results, as did all my friends. I bet most of those who say the exams are getting easier would struggle to pass them.

Teenagers just care more than they used to and know that they have to work harder for the future.

So I wish people would stop slagging teenagers off and recognise how hard some of us work.
