A brave mum who has undergone a hip replacement operation has battled against all the odds to help a cancer charity.
Kerry Griffin, 38, who underwent the major surgery only last year, is to take part in a challenging sponsored swim.
The mother of one young son, from Varrier Jones Drive, Papworth Everard, will be raising funds for Cancer Research UK by completing the event later this month.
Kerry, whose son Ollie is two, said: "Last year I had a hip replacement after suffering hip problems my whole life.
"I have always wanted to do the 5k Race for Life that Cancer Research UK organise every year, but even with a new hip I still felt it would be too much for me and so the next best thing is swimming the distance."
Kerry will be attempting her long distance swim from midday at the Cambridge Belfry Leisure Club on Monday, November 24.
She added: "I have supported Cancer Research UK since a good friend was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 29. Over the last year my father has had chemotherapy and radiotherapy after having a tumour removed from his bladder and another friend had a mastectomy.
"These people have inspired me do go out and do something."
Cancer Research UK is the world's leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research. It supports research into all aspects of cancer through the work of more than 4,250 scientists, doctors and nurses.
Kerry said: "I have wanted to do the 5k Race for Life for many years, but even after having my hip replacement I don't feel I could run that distance – but I could swim it. Every person must be touched by cancer in some way either through friends, family or personally. I am doing this for my dad and a very dear friend."
>> So far Kerry has raised more than £800, but is looking to collect even more. If you would like to sponsor Kerry's swim please send a cheque, payable to Cancer Research UK, to Kerry Griffin, S2 Partnership Ltd, 14-15 Avenue Business Park, Elsworth, Cambs.
