A SWAN has been found dead in a St Neots back water after getting caught up in discarded fishing tackle.

The bird was discovered by a passerby on Thursday (November 20) at about 9.30am in St Neots back water near Brook Road, which feeds into Hen Brook.

Founder of St Ives Swan Rescue Peggy Seamark is disgusted that even after 15 years of campaigning, some fishermen still thoughtlessly leave their rubbish in waterways endangering wildlife.

She said: "I don't think the swan could have stood a chance, its head was under water.

"It's an absolutely horrific way to die. Anything to do with fishing tackle is extremely painful. If it swallows it and it gets stuck it has to be taken to the RSPCA hospital in Norfolk where it has to undergo surgery.

"These sorts of accidents just shouldn't happen because fishermen should be more careful."

A few weeks ago a swan was found with a ring pull round its beak in Huntingdon which needed treatment at a local vets.

As a lifelong angler i am disgusted with the lazy idiot who could not be botherd to take home their rubbish . Any rubbish in the swim is the anglers responsibility and should be taken home/disposed of properly .
Become a club bailiff and stop the litter louts from fishing .
